The virtual keyboard that pops up on the bottom portion of the screen is very useful when you want to enter data into your iPhone, iPad. To help make iPhone, iPad perform faster, Apple made the virtual keyboard typically resemble a typewriter or computer keyboard. However, how much do you know to make the best use of the virtual keyboard?

Certain onscreen keys have different purposes, depending on the app you're using. For example, when you access the Spotlight Search screen, the large Search key will show on the right side of the keyboard; while when you use the Page word processor app, the Search Key become s the Return key; when you're using an app involving numeric data entry, like Numbers, you'll notice the layout and design of the virtual keyboard change dramatically.

Different characters are available for some keys, depending on the app you're using. Take Safari as an example, press and hold the question mark ("?") key to access .us, .edu, .net, and .org website extensions. However, when sending a message or using Pages, press and hold question mark key to access quotation marks.

Divide the virtual keyboard in half – To make it easier to type on the virtual keyboard, use the index fingers on both of your hands simultaneously, place them in the center of the virtual keyboard, and then move them apart freely.

Unlock and move the virtually keyboard upward – Hold down the Hide Keyboard key which displays in the lower-right corner of the keyboard, and choose Undock from the pop-up menu. Besides, you can split or merge the keyboard if you want.

Adjust auto-capitalization, autocorrection, check spelling, enable caps lock and the keyboard shortcuts options – Launch Settings > tap on the Genral option > Tap on the Keyboard > toggle on/off the relevant virtual switch.

Another quick method to turn on Caps Lock: double-tap the Shift key which displays an upward-pointing arrow. Tap the key again to turn it off.

Make the virtual keyboard hide/appear– To hide the keyboard, simply tap on the Hide Keyboard Key (iPad and iPad mini only) located in the lower-right corner of the keyboard; to reopen it, just tap on an empty data field.

Make the virtual keyboard keys larger – If it's easier for you to type with larger keys, simply rotate the iPhone or iPad from portrait to landscape mode.

Create keyboard shortcuts – Instead of typing the whole sentences, you can simply type a three-letter code that you assign to that shortcut, and then let the virtual keyboard insert the complete sentence for you.

Change keyboard layouts – You can make full use of the built-in alternative keyboard layouts, some of which offering emotions, such as Emoji, and some offering characters from various foreign languages.
